What is nail technician insurance?

This is specialist insurance cover for the unique risks associated with working as a nail technician. A comprehensive nail technician insurance policy can cover you for a range of situations, from loss or damage of your kit or equipment, to accidental client injuries, illnesses, or allergic reactions as a result of your treatment.

Why nail techs need insurance

There are many reasons why a client may choose to make a claim against you:

  • They could slip, trip, or fall while visiting your premises
  • They could suffer an allergic reaction, or even fall ill, following your treatment
  • You could accidentally injure them while administering treatment
  • During a home visit, you could spill nail varnish on a client’s carpet

Any claim could result in costly legal fees, along with potential compensation payments. Nail technician insurance could cover all of these costs, and more.

Please note that if you employ any staff then you have a legal obligation to get employer’s liability insurance. The good news is that this can be included in your comprehensive nail technician insurance package.

What does nail technician insurance cover?

Core areas of cover we offer to nail technicians can include:

  • Public liability insurance
To cover you for legal fees and compensation costs should a client get injured in your home or premises or you inadvertently damage their property.
  • Employer’s liability insurance
A legal obligation if you have employees, this covers you if your employee suffers injury or ill health as a result of your work.
  • Personal injury cover
To cover you should you become injured or unwell and be unable to work.
  • Buildings cover
This is to cover your work premises, whether it’s a salon or your home.
  • Business interruption insurance
To cover your lost income or expenses to resume operations should your business have had to unexpectedly close.
  • Contents cover, for your equipment, along with any furniture, fixtures, and fittings
This is to cover the items within your business premises, including your equipment.
  • Treatment risks insurance
To protect you against claims of injury, illness or allergic reactions caused by your treatments. Some clients can have allergic reactions to the acrylic in acrylic nails and gel polish, for example.

Do nail techs need public liability insurance?

Yes, all nail technicians should consider public liability insurance.

As a nail technician, you will work very closely with your clients performing highly delicate work while using some very valuable products. Public liability insurance will cover you for the many risks associated with this particular work.

In the unlikely event that anything goes wrong – whether it is a spilled bottle of varnish, or an accidental trip or fall – your policy can cover you for any costs that may arise.

Insurance for home-based and mobile nail technicians

If you are a home-based nail technician, then your standard home insurance policy will not cover you for any business activity that takes place in or around your home. Your nail tech insurance, though, will cover you for all the risks associated with your work, whether you do home visits, or you receive clients at your own home.
