Who needs mechanic insurance?

Specialist mechanic insurance is for any professional who repairs, modifies, or services vehicles.

Please note that James Hallam cannot arrange insurance for mobile mechanics.

Who does mechanic insurance cover?

Mechanic insurance can cover you for a range of risks, from accidental damage to customers’ vehicles, to loss, theft, or damage of your stock, tools, or machinery.

Core areas of cover can include:

  • Road Risk and Public Liability Vehicle Insurance – This will cover your customers’ vehicles while you work on them. You can even get cover to drive vehicles that do not belong to you to and from your premises.
  • Contents Insurance – Cover for your stock, along with any tools, equipment, and machinery you use as part of your business, for loss, damage, or theft.
  • Buildings Insurance – This will cover your business premises for damages arising from fire, flood, theft, vandalism, and other events.
  • Public Liability Insurance – Cover for claims arising from customers, contractors, and other members of the public for accidents and injuries sustained on your premises.
  • Employer’s Liability Insurance – This can cover any compensation and legal fees that may arise should any employees sustain accidents or injuries on the job. Please note that you have a legal requirement to get employer’s liability insurance if you employ any staff.

Why do mechanics need insurance?

Your customers place a lot of trust in you. If a customer is dissatisfied with your work, or if their car breaks down or malfunctions following your maintenance, they may make a claim against you for negligence or poor workmanship. Specialist mechanic insurance can cover you for issues associated with complaints, as well as broader risks you might face. Mechanic insurance can cover you for:

  • Legal fees and compensation claims
  • Loss or damage to tools or equipment
  • Business disruption due to fire, flood or theft
  • Cover for injuries or accidents to customers or employees on your premises

Without dedicated cover, you would be liable to pay these costs yourself.

How much does mechanics insurance cost?

The amount you pay for your specialist mechanic insurance cover will vary depending on a number of factors, including:

  • The size of your garage, and your workforce.
  • The specific type of services you offer, and the specific type of vehicles you work on.
  • Your location.
  • The level of cover you choose, and how you choose to pay your premium.

We can tailor your policy to suit your needs and budget.
